Dear Wood Dale Residents,
With the extension of the Shelter in Place Order to May 30, as well as the requirements for social distancing and personal protective equipment, the Wood Dale Park District has had to change the way we do business. Since closing our facilities on March 16, staff has been gathering information from the Illinois Department of Health, The Center for Disease Control, and other industry experts. Our primary concern is the safety of our participants and staff.
COVID-19 has placed financial strain on the Park District. On April 6, over 70 seasonal and part-time staff were furloughed and will not return to active employment until it is financially feasible. Unlike other taxing entities, park districts depend heavily on fees and charges to operate, rather than property taxes alone. To help bridge the financial gap, staff are offering virtual fee-based recreation programs, and Salt Creek Golf Club is re-opening on Friday, May 1, under new regulated state requirements.
A survey was sent out to 671 users of The Beach Water Park in mid-April. Over 190 individuals, approximately 28%, responded to the survey.
- 69% of the respondents were either not planning to buy a pass or were undecided
- 48% of the respondents were either not planning to purchase daily admission or were undecided
- 65% of the respondents were not planning to register their child(ren) for swim lessons
These numbers are discouraging, but we needed to ask the questions to help plan for the future. The Beach Waterpark is not a money-making facility for the Park District. Knowing that the season would be shortened, participation may be down, capacity would be reduced due to social distancing, and expenses would likely increase to be able to adhere to new guidelines that led us to make a very difficult decision. It is with great sadness that the Wood Park District Board of Commissioners and Staff announce that The Beach Water Park will not be open for the 2020 season.
These are unprecedented times and this decision was not made without extensive thought and analysis. It is hard to imagine summer without going to the pool. We realize that you need recreation, now more than ever. The Park District is committed to providing new ways to serve you and your input is welcomed at any time. We wish you and your family good health.
